A late Paleoproterozoic (1.74 Ga) deep‐sea, low‐temperature, iron‐oxidizing microbial hydrothermal vent community from Arizona, USA ArchiMer
Little, Crispin T. S.; Johannessen, Karen C; Bengtson, Stefan; Chan, Clara S; Ivarsson, Magnus; Slack, John F; Broman, Curt; Thorseth, Ingunn H.; Grenne, Tor; Rouxel, Olivier; Bekker, Andrey.
Modern marine hydrothermal vents occur in a wide variety of tectonic settings and are characterized by seafloor emission of fluids rich in dissolved chemicals and rapid mineral precipitation. Some hydrothermal systems vent only low‐temperature Fe‐rich fluids, which precipitate deposits dominated by iron oxyhydroxides, in places together with Mn‐oxyhydroxides and amorphous silica. While a proportion of this mineralization is abiogenic, most is the result of the metabolic activities of benthic, Fe‐oxidizing bacteria (FeOB), principally belonging to the Zetaproteobacteria. These micro‐organisms secrete micrometer‐scale stalks, sheaths, and tubes with a variety of morphologies, composed largely of ferrihydrite that act as sacrificial structures, preventing...

A Limited Effect of Sub-Tropical Typhoons on Phytoplankton Dynamics ArchiMer
Chai, Fei; Wang, Yuntao; Xing, Xiaogang; Yan, Yunwei; Xue, Huijie; Wells, Mark; Boss, Emmanuel.
Typhoons are assumed to stimulate ocean primary production through the upward mixing of nutrients into the surface ocean, based largely on observations of increased surface chlorophyll concentrations following the passage of typhoons. This surface chlorophyll enhancement, seen on occasion by satellites, more often is undetected due to intense cloud coverage. Daily data from a BGC-Argo profiling float revealed the upper-ocean response to Typhoon Trami in the Northwest Pacific Ocean. Temperature and chlorophyll changed rapidly, with a significant drop in sea surface temperature and surge in surface chlorophyll associated with strong vertical mixing, which was only partially captured by satellite observations. However, no net increase in vertically integrated...

A MALDI-TOF MS database for fast identification of Vibrio spp. potentially pathogenic to marine mollusks ArchiMer
Moussa, M.; Cauvin, E.; Le Piouffle, A.; Lucas, O.; Bidault, Adeline; Paillard, Christine; Benoit, F.; Thuillier, B.; Treilles, M.; Travers, Marie-agnes; Garcia, Celine.
In mollusk aquaculture, a large number of Vibrio species are considered major pathogens. Conventional methods based on DNA amplification and sequencing used to accurately identify Vibrio species are unsuitable for monitoring programs because they are time-consuming and expensive. The aim of this study was, therefore, to develop the MALDI-TOF MS method in order to establish a rapid identification technique for a large panel of Vibrio species. We created the EnviBase containing 120 main spectra projections (MSP) of the Vibrio species that are potentially responsible for mollusk diseases, comprising 25 species: V. aestuarianus, V. cortegadensis, V. tapetis and species belonging to the Coralliilyticus, Harveyi, Mediterranei, and Orientalis clades. Each MSP was...

A methodological framework to predict the individual and population‐level distributions from tracking data ArchiMer
Chambault, Philippine; Hattab, Tarek; Mouquet, Pascal; Bajjouk, Touria; Jean, Claire; Ballorain, Katia; Ciccione, Stéphane; Dalleau, Mayeul; Bourjea, Jerome.
Despite the large number of species distribution modelling (SDM) applications driven by tracking data, individual information is most of the time neglected and traditional SDM approaches commonly focus on predicting the potential distribution at the species or population‐level. By running classical SDMs (population approach) with mixed models including a random factor to account for the variability attributable to individual (individual approach), we propose an innovative five‐steps framework to predict the potential and individual‐level distributions of mobile species using GPS data collected from green turtles. Pseudo‐absences were randomly generated following an environmentally‐stratified procedure. A negative exponential dispersal kernel was...

A Multi-Elements Isotope Approach to Assess the Geographic Provenance of Manila Clams (Ruditapes philippinarum) via Recombining Appropriate Elements ArchiMer
Won, Eun-ji; Kim, Seung Hee; Go, Young-shin; Kumar, K. Suresh; Kim, Min-seob; Yoon, Suk-hee; Bayon, Germain; Kim, Jung-hyun; Shin, Kyung-hoon.
The increasing global consumption of seafood has led to increased trade among nations, accompanied by mislabeling and fraudulent practices that have rendered authentication crucial. The multi-isotope ratio analysis is considered as applicable tool for evaluating geographical authentications but requires information and experience to select target elements such as isotopes, through a distinction method based on differences in habitat and physiology due to origin. The present study examined recombination conditions of multi-elements that facilitated geographically distinct classifications of the clams to sort out appropriate elements. Briefly, linear discriminant analysis (LDA) analysis was performed according to several combinations of five stable isotopes...

A new Hyphessobrycon (Characiformes: Characidae) of the Hyphessobrycon heterorhabdus species-group from the lower Amazon basin, Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Faria,Tiago C.; Guimarães,Karen L. A.; Rodrigues,Luís R. R.; Oliveira,Claudio; Lima,Flávio C.T..
ABSTRACT A new species of Hyphessobrycon belonging to the Hyphessobrycon heterorhabdus species-group from the lower rio Tapajós, state of Pará, Brazil, is described. The new species is allocated into the Hyphessobrycon heterorhabdus species-group due to its color pattern, composed by an anteriorly well-defined, horizontally elongated humeral blotch that becomes diffuse and blurred posteriorly, where it overlaps with a conspicuous midlateral dark stripe that becomes blurred towards the caudal peduncle and the presence, in living specimens, of a tricolored longitudinal pattern composed by a dorsal red or reddish longitudinal stripe, a middle iridescent, golden or silvery longitudinal stripe, and a more ventrally-lying longitudinal dark pattern composed by...

A new method to estimate planktonic oxygen metabolism using high‐frequency sensor measurements in mesocosm experiments and considering daytime and nighttime respirations ArchiMer
Soulié, Tanguy; Mas, Sébastien; Parin, David; Vidussi, Francesca; Mostajir, Behzad.
Understanding how aquatic ecosystems respond to perturbations has emerged as a crucial way to predict the future of these ecosystems and to assess their capacity to produce oxygen and store atmospheric carbon. In this context, in situ mesocosm experiments are a useful approach for simulating disturbances and observing changes in planktonic communities over time and under controlled conditions. Within mesocosm experiments, the estimation of fundamental parameters such as gross primary production (GPP), net community production (NCP), and respiration (R) allows the evaluation of planktonic metabolic responses to a perturbation. The continuous estimation of these metabolic parameters in real time and at high frequency is made possible by employing noninvasive...

A new, narrowly distributed, and critically endangered species of Characidium (Characiformes: Crenuchidae) from the Distrito Federal, Central Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Melo,Marcelo Roberto Souto de; Ribeiro,Mauro César Lambert de Brito; Lima,Flávio César Thadeo de.
ABSTRACT A new species of Characidium is described from the Cerrado biome, in Brasília, Distrito Federal, Central Brazil. The new species can be readily diagnosed by the presence of two or three longitudinal rows of dots along the body sides, absence of bars, by the short pectoral fin, which does not reach the vertical through the dorsal fin origin. Additional useful diagnostic characters are the scaled isthmus, absence of the adipose fin, and the terminal mouth. The new species is only known from the córrego Taquara and its tributaries, a tributary of ribeirão do Gama, upstream from lago Paranoá, in the upper rio Paraná basin. In accordance to the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria, the new species is categorized as Critically Endangered.

A New Probabilistic Wave Breaking Model for Dominant Wind‐sea Waves Based on the Gaussian Field Theory ArchiMer
Stringari, Ce; Prevosto, Marc; Filipot, Jean-francois; Leckler, Fabien; Guimaraes, Pv.
This paper presents a novel method for obtaining the probability wave of breaking (Pb) of deep water, dominant wind‐sea waves (that is, waves made of the energy within ±30% of the peak wave frequency) derived from Gaussian wave field theory. For a given input wave spectrum we demonstrate how it is possible to derive a joint probability density function between wave phase speed (c) and horizontal orbital velocity at wave crest (u) from which a model for Pb can be obtained. A non‐linear kinematic wave breaking criterion consistent with the Gaussian framework is further proposed. Our model would allow, therefore, for application of the classical wave breaking criterion (that is, wave breaking occurs if u/c > 1) in spectral wave models which, to the...

A NEW RECORD FOR THE MILK FROG Trachycephalus coriaceus (ANURA: HYLIDAE) FROM TELES PIRES RIVER, SOUTH AMAZONIA, BRAZIL Acta biol.Colomb.
FERREIRA,Vanessa Gonçalves; THALER,Rafaela; FOLLY,Henrique; DA SILVA,Leandro Alves.
ABSTRACT Herein, we report a new record of the milk frog Trachycephalus coriaceus for the Brazilian southern Amazonia and provide an updated geographic distribution map. We collected one specimen of T. coriaceus on 8 november 2016, during a nocturnal survey inside a dense ombrophilous forest in the right bank of the Teles Pires River, municipality ofJacareacanga, southern of Pará State. The record of T. coriaceus to Jacareacanga is the first to the State. The disjoint geographic distribution of this species along de Amazonia may just reflect the paucity of amphibian knowledge throughout this biome and the difficulty to detect this species in the field, given its explosive reproductive behavior.

A NEW RECORD OF Leishmania (Viannia) guyanensis (Trypanosomatidae) FROM THE PACIFIC COAST OF COLOMBIA Acta biol.Colomb.
MARTINEZ ABAD,Lily Paola; PATERNINA TUIRÁN,Luís Enrique; PATERNINA-GÓMEZ,Margaret; PÉREZ DORIA,Alveiro; BEJARANO,Eduar Elias.
ABSTRACT The aim of this study was the identification of Leishmania species that causes cutaneous leishmaniasis in a patient from Buenaventura, Valle del Cauca, on the Pacific coast of Colombia. Clinical samples were obtained from a 29 years-old male who presented a distinct ulcer with raised borders on his neck. Samples were taken for direct microscopic examination, parasite culture, and molecular identification of the infecting Leishmania species by sequencing of the cytochrome b gene. Direct examination was positive for amastigotes of Leishmania but the culture was negative. The infecting parasite species was identified as L. (V.) guyanensis by means of the nucleotide sequence of a 509 bp fragment of the cytochrome b gene. We report the presence of L....

A novel duplex qPCR assay for stepwise detection of multiple Perkinsea protistan infections of amphibian tissues ArchiMer
Smilansky, Vanessa; Chambouvet, Aurelie; Reeves, Mari; Richards, Thomas A.; Milner, David S..
Alveolate protists within the phylum Perkinsea have been found to infect amphibians across a broad taxonomic and geographic range. Phylogenetic analysis has suggested the existence of two clades of amphibian Perkinsea: a putatively non-pathogenic clade linked to asymptomatic infections of tadpoles in Africa, Europe and South America, and a putatively pathogenic clade linked to disease and mass mortality events of tadpoles in North America. Here, we describe the development of a duplex TaqMan qPCR assay to detect and discriminate between rDNA sequences from both clades of Perkinsea in amphibian tissues. The assay uses a single primer pair to target an 18S small subunit (SSU) ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene region shared between the two clades, and two...

A planta e o grão de arroz e as formas de apresentação aos consumidores. Infoteca-e
